Who is the greatest left-handed batsman of all time?

As was the case with the question we looked at in ‘Scenario Saturday #2: Who Would You Want to Bat for Your Life?‘, the debate around who the best left-handed batsman is seems to be never-ending among hardcore fans.

Over the years we have seen many prolific left-handed batsmen. Matthew Hayden, Brian Lara, Sir Garfield Sobers, Kumar Sangakkara – the list goes on.

But if you had to choose one name to answer the question ‘who is the greatest left-handed batsman of all time?‘, it can be difficult to address.

Taking into account the different formats makes this even more of a challenge.

Some dominated Tests, while others thrived in the coloured clothing (T20s and ODIs).

I have compiled a shortlist of candidates who, I feel, could be realistic contenders for the mantle of ‘the greatest left-handed batsman of all time‘.

  1. With Gilchrist, Hussey and Sangakkara in the mix too, it is a difficult choice…eventually, playing without a helmet on uncovered pitches with a record 365 not out which took decades to be beaten, Sobers stands above others for me…
